TOP 5 BLACK ART EXHIBITS TO VISIT IN JUNE

Photo of Jean Michel Basquiat

Art exhibits in museums is a great activity to do with friends, family, and a bae. I love visiting museums and the various exhibitions especially during the summer months.

Here are 5 museums you should visit this summer:

  1. King Pleasure: Jean Michel Basquiat NYC

King Pleasure Exhibition 2022

Jean Michel Basquiat’s art exhibition has been curated by Basquiat's family and highlighting their family life. King Pleasure’s art exhibition is cohesive in showing Basquiat's relationship with his father, his sisters, other family members and dear friends. His relationship with his father is highlighted through works of art -depictions of boxing (a sport they watched together). The portraits of Basquiat are raw and candid. Check out this art exhibition and learn of Jean Michel's story through his art. The exhibition is until June 30, 2022.

2. Dena Lawson: Museum of Modern Art PS1 NYC

Visiting MOMA and Dena Lawson’s exhibition

Dena Lawson created raw and uncut portraits of Black "hood." Her portraits are unifying and familiar to the Black experience. I was reminded of Black womanhood in the '90s. This art exhibition included portraits of naked Black women, urban apartments and urban lifestyle. The essence of leather sofas, lion-ness sculptures and Black love in the '90s grants nostalgia. Check out Dena Lawson’s exhibition through September 5, 2022.

3. Afro-Atlantic Histories: National Gallery of Art DC

Afro-Latino feature at Afro-Atlantic Histories Exhibition

I enjoyed seeing Black represented worldwide and this art exhibition showed just that. Afro-Atlantic histories exhibition included art from all African diaspora including afro-Latino artists. I appreciated seeing the art of Afro-Latino artists in how they merge Blackness with Latin. I learned so much of the stories of other Black people in other cultures. Afro-Atlantic histories exhibition is through July 17, 2022.

4. Glenstone Museum -Maryland

The New Black Vanguard features photography between Black art and fashion. According to Cleveland Museum of Art, “The New Black Vanguard fuse art and fashion photography in ways that break traditional boundaries between genres. They open conversations around the representation of the Black body and Black lives as subject matter and challenge the idea that Blackness is homogenous.” New Black Vanguard will be available until September 9, 2022.
