TOP THREE WINERIES IN DMV AREA

Discovering wine and new wineries has become my second hobby. At first, the conversations, fun and ultimate tipsyness I felt while trying new wines for $15 was intoxicating.

As my pallet and pockets grew, I found learning about the actual wines and vineyards fun. I even learned etiquette for drinking wine. For example, pick up the glass, point it away and make sure there is no debris in wine. Then, hold the bottom of the glass with two fingers, swirl the glass about 8 times and smell the wine. You should not smell vinegar, wet cardboard and nail polish remover. Try it the next time you have a glass of wine!

DMV has its own wine culture, filled with family-owned wineries, specialities and the classics. I've visited many wineries and festivals in DMV area and here is the top 3:

  1. Basignani Winery

Located in Sparks, Maryland, Basignani Winery is a family owned winery established in 1986 and is known for their classic rendition of Chardonnay and their own rose', Elena.

What makes this winery my favorite: their rendition of Riesling and Vidal. The Riesling is is sweet yet mellow and smooth enough for those who like dry white. Vidal is sweet and I usually drink Vidal on a super hot day with watermelon.

In addition to the wine, Basignani has the BEST pizza you will ever taste. The pizza is made in a true oven brick with fresh and natural ingredients.

The vibe of the winery is family and friendly. Any place that makes me feel at home is a place I will return to and no doubt I have returned to Basignani every summer.

2. Linganore WineCellars

I must admit, I'm fashionably late in visiting this winery. My friends have raved about Linganore Winecellars, especially the caribbean festival that happens every year at the winery. I have yet to go but I decided to visit the winery once COVID restrictions were lifted in Maryland. Located in Mount Airy, Maryland, Linganore is a larger family-owned winery, settled on over 230 acres of land.

This winery has a headquarters feel to it yet the beautiful acres are breathtaking. Linganore is known for their honey and fruit wines such as blackberry and mango sangria.

What makes this winery one of my favorites: Chardonnay and Sangria. The Chardonnay is crisp and smooth. The Sangria is sweet with the taste of Niagara citrus fruit. I added citrus fruits to my Sangria to add a tartness to wine. Linganore had food trucks such as tacos and pizza available as well as a band when I visited. The options of the food trucks were essential and added a bonus to my visit.

3. Crimson Lane Vineyards

Located in Linden, Virginia, Crimson Lane Vineyards opened in 2014 and is known for their Collina Wine. This vineyard has spectacular views and great customer service. This winery is made for the lux black girl who enjoy charcuterie boards and lounge seating. The wine selections, ambiance, and hospitality is impeccable.
