TOP 4 WAYS TO EXPLORE LA WITH INSECURE VIBES

Insecure, a black tv sitcom created by talented Issa Rae has come to an end. This show has been my addiction for the last 6 years because it was parallel to my own relationship woes, friendship dynamics and career shifts. Even though I was #teamNathan, it was amazing to watch the growth of this season.

As a writer, I was inspired by Issa’s dedication to tell our stories-black stories-plainly, openly and differently. I cried, laugh, screamed and smiled throughout all 5 seasons. And that is what makes a great writer-to bring out all emotions.

It’s so hard to say goodbye….Did ya’ll finish singing?

It was important to Issa to highlight her roots in LA-particularly Inglewood. It’s the end of the season, we don’t have to say goodbye to LA.

We can explore LA-INSECURE STYLE.

Here’s the top 3 places to explore to get #Insecurevibes in LA:

  1. The Dunes Apartments.

This apartment complex actually exists; people actually live in them. The Dunes Apartment is actually where we meet Issa and Lawrence and learn the dynamic of their relationship in season one. This apartment is also where Issa move out when they broke up. In the season finale, she drives past these apartments as a symbol of growth and reflection.

I went to this apartment complex when visiting LA and had a chance to just sit and write. The residents were pretty friendly (they probably thought I lived there). When I checked the hashtag, many people have visited these apartments for Instagrammable moment of the show. Visit The Dunes for your instagrammable moment.

2. Tacos

Issa and Molly’s friendship included eating lots of take-out, which included lots of tacos. Issa’s relationship with Nathan also develops because of tacos. Tacos is an #LAVIBE and #INSECUREVIBE. Tacos so happen to be my favorite type of dish-actually anything Mexican. Some cool taco spots to try in LA are Worldwide Tacos, Taco Mell and Tacos Los Palomas. The tacos range from $5-$8. Price and taste is amazing!

3. Runyon Canyon Park

What’s LA without hiking? Issa and Molly hiked in season 4 to resolve or escape their friendship problems. The hike and oneness with nature seemed to help-a little. LA is known for its cool hiking spots such as Runyon Canyon Park. Take a morning hike at Runyon Canyon Park with your friends to get over the tacos and issues from the night before. The hike is moderate 2.7 hike; bring water and watch out for other hikers. My friends and I actually hiked Runyon Canyon Park with an Airbnb Experience Guide for $35. We actually learned about the history of LA and the park during this experience. For newbies, I recommend trying this experience with a local LA guide.

4. Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen.

What’s an insecure vibe without a cafe or coffee? Enjoy some coffee from Issa’s own shop, Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen. Issa teamed up with Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan and created a coffee shop that foster community, creativity, and connection over quality food and drinks. The menu includes savory breakfast dishes such as Bangin Breakfast sandwich (fried egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, and spicy mayo on brioche bun). The coffee includes iced lattes and local roasted coffees. This is a great spot to catch up with friends and work on creative projects.

What’s some other places we can explore in LA that gives #Insecurevibes? The Insecure chapter has ended but the black travel in LA continues…
